Building Permits
A Building permit is your legal permission to begin construction or demolition. It means that the Town of Minto has approved the plans for a new structure, an addition, an alteration or renovation. Approved plans must comply with the Ontario Building Code, municipal by-laws and other applicable laws. Building Permits regulate the types of construction allowed in the community and ensure building standards are met. The Building Permit process protects each homeowner's interest, as well as the community at large, and provides for the erection of safe structures. Building Permits help ensure that any structural change is safe, legal and sound.
A Building Permit is required for many types of projects, including but not limited to: New Buildings, Additions, Change of Use of an existing Building, Installation or Modification of a Building's Plumbing system, Structural and Fire Separation Alterations, Building Mounted Solar Panels, Pools, Decks, Fire Places, Sheds, etc.
If you are unsure whether or not you require a Building Permit, please come in and see us at the Municipal Administrative Office, or give us a call at (519) 338-2511. Even though your project may not require a Building Permit, you must still comply with the Ontario Building Code and Zoning By-law.
The process to obtain a Building Permit generally goes as follows: applicant obtains compliance to applicable laws; Building Permit Application submitted; Building Permit Application reviewed for compliance to Ontario Building Code, zoning by-law, other municipal by-laws and applicable laws; Building Permit issued (pending application complies with fore mentioned legislations) and applicable fees dues; construction commences; project inspected at specific construction stages; final inspection completed and Building Permit file closed. Due to the fact that each individual project is unique, the above process may vary.
The time required to obtain a Building Permit varies depending on the season. Spring, summer and fall are our busiest time, and permit application review usually takes up to two weeks to complete. For larger projects, three to four weeks may be required to complete the application review. A Building Permit cannot be issued until compliance to the Ontario Building Code, zoning by-law, and other applicable laws have been verified.
Permit fees vary pending on the type of project proposed. A copy of the Building Permit Fee Schedule can be found below. Also, please note that Development Charges apply to certain construction projects.
